I'm Sitting This One Out

First there was a blizzard, then another blizzard (or nearly one), then a collapsed drawing room ceiling led to a last minute cancellation. The net result has been a string of field trip postponements. Ergo, I have only myself to present this week. I am seated on terrace steps at the Braes, Herbert Pratt's former country place at Glen Cove, Long Island. It's a very grand house ('Forget Gatsby,' posted on October 11, 2012) and I was happy that day. Next week: Winterthur, a remarkable building, quite aside from the treasures it contains.

  6. Oh, egad, a collapsed ceiling sounds like a situation that will require consultations, corrective surgery, and post-operative cosmetics. (Perhaps there's a story in it...?)

Enjoy what sunshine you can find!

  7. Check out Gibraltar Mansion while you are in Wilmington! The Marian Coffin gardens are intact but the mansion has fallen on hard times. Still worth a quick visit!

  9. i realize it would be quite a commute (a sadly unlikely one, i imagine), but if you ever make to Los Angeles, i hope you would consider a visit to "Greystone" (the Doheny mansion in Beverly Hills...and the site of the 1929 murder-suicide of Ned Doheny Jr & his secretary, Hugh Plunkett). it's a huge & amazing, gorgeous house with a fascinating history & i'd give my eyeteeth to hear you retell it (...in written form, of course)!!!
