We would walk right into the property all the time ( in back of the butler Mr Allen's house. ) . No one ever yelled at us and once a lady showed us her collection of dachsunds that she was raising. What a great place to grow up . Think of all the exhibits now where they paint the walls to add some emphasis to the work, really getting away from that plain surrounding. Frankly, the shop has a wonderful sense of reality and charm that the rest of the spaces lack because of the view of walls and fireplace. Have to say that I really liked your honest portrayal of Frick. Was just reading a guidebook for the Rockefeller estate in Pocantico Hills, NY where it makes it sound like John D. did nothing but make money so he could be a philanthropist. I love the art, libraries and assorted cultural treasures these men amassed but I always remind myself that they were built with what I think of as "blood money." The house bears a certain exterior resemblance to Old Westbury Gardens, also on Long Island and also a museum today, although George Crawley was the architect of that house, not Codman.

It's a small point, but Elsie de Wolfe designed the second floor interiors (mostly bedrooms)of the Frick Mansion on Fifth Avenue, not the first floor rooms that the public sees today. Those rooms were done by the English firm of White, Allom. Some people take them as examples of de Wolfe's style, which they are not.

Incidentally, the Frick masion in Pittsburgh, Clayton, is also a museum. The family left if virtually unchanged after they decamped for NYC, although it seems the rarely visited it. Disappointing to see plain stark white boxes built in all those beautiful interiorsAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
