I agree I prefer the original ones although the replacements are none too shabby. NYIT has been a good steward of the estate and the less elaborate formal gardens but letting anyone take a perfectly intact complete marble facade of a long demolished 5th Ave mansion is simply insane. why not preserve it? There's an air of English Stately Home comfort attained in the midst of marble grandeur: not at all Upscale Funeral Home, which is too often the case when 'renovations' have been inflicted on the original design.

Have you had an opportunity to potter about in the salvage yard, John? I've rarely read anything about it perhaps because its architects are less well remembered than the designers of other gilded age NYC mansions. I believe the handsome paneled dining room from that house was later incorporated into the Phipp's Westbury House (today's Old Westbury Gardens). That house is always worth a visit.

This house has a nice if rather generic feel to it. The rococo mantelpiece in one of the master bedrooms (his) is quite attractive. Maybe it was the Spencer-Churchill taint (they've all been crazy since Duchess Sarah, Winston not excepted, not least in their relations with architects) - see David Cannadine's 'Aspects of Aristocracy' - including brother Ivor. A patron of Lutyens who commissioned at Ashby St. Ledgers one of that architect's more elaborate confabulations, it was said of him "One must suppose that God knew best when He created Ivor Guest."Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6170852285107502075.post-20651831938657377292015-01-29T09:55:23.026-08:002015-01-29T09:55:23.026-08:00The exception that proves the rule! It is fitting, I think, for the NYIT to have dedicated the house to the memory of strategic bombing, since that is more or less what they've done to the interiors - ...though 'strategic' may not be quite accurate as a descripitor. The wall coverings (sheet wood panels from the seventies in one upstairs room!) and changes to the service areas, bathrooms, and architectural fabric made me shiver with, how shall I put it, horror. Also, the original C/H stair hall was more beautiful in situ (not to denigrate the magnificence of the HT NYC Phipps house...it just was wrong proportionally for the LI house.) Thanks for the vintage photos...the house was once very beautiful...still is, somewhat.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6170852285107502075.post-82010427395985806282015-01-29T06:58:36.644-08:002015-01-29T06:58:36.644-08:00Thanks, John!
