The two homes were built by my great, great, great, great grandfathers - Otis and Lyman. (Otis' daughter married Lyman's son. The two family's were neighbors on Beacon Street in Boston.) I am so lucky to have such an interesting family history and items from both of those homes. It is something of a nostalgia post for me as I grew up in the Boston area and have wonderful memories of walking through these venerable old streets. There are two Bulfinch buildings at Phillips Academy in Andover where I grew up, both of which are in need of exterior restoration. By the way, John, I recently pulled up on You Tube the episode of Biography devoted to the Vanderbilts - the one you appeared in. You did exceptionally well on camera - are there any other videos on You Tube that feature your commentary? If so, I'd love to see them.

Titanic BillAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6170852285107502075.post-35930732772767575152014-01-31T06:01:25.118-08:002014-01-31T06:01:25.118-08:00I was thinking "that's an awful lot of bu...I was thinking "that's an awful lot of buildings for one architect to have designed in such a small city" until I remembered how few real architects there were in America during that time period. It does explain why even the fine house all looked similar!

I just read a book and it made me think of your website, so in case you have not heard of it yet - Empty Mansions by Bill Dedman and Paul Clark Newell Jr. It probably could have been merely an article (or blog post!) but it was very interesting nonetheless. I only wish there had been more pictures, of course!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6170852285107502075.post-29548742129678965532014-01-30T10:47:50.204-08:002014-01-30T10:47:50.204-08:00Absolutely a beautiful place! what a history..than...Absolutely a beautiful place! what a history..thank you Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
