The bell, quite large , I was told, was removed from a school just east before Rt 36.The bell bore a date: Jun.30, 1890 and was marked CHM Bell Foundry. The assistant suggested the bell was made for the school, which did not exist in 1890. I wondered? Checking the Ken-Book bell registry(invintory) I found a bell, same size, weighing nearly 400 pounds made for Norman Munro, a well known NYC publisher who built his cottage" near cedar and now Norwood Avenues, in what then was Eatontown, now West
Long Branch. The size and date, with the foundry name are hall marks of a story unlike that believed by the local historians. Munro was also a developer and avid steam boat yachtsman avidly challenging all comers to races on and around Pleasure Bay. Sadly Norman Munro dies just after his cottage is completed- the most lavish in the area. His widow resided in the home which featured a "tower" 150 feet tall, tall enough to view the surf. No mention of a bell is ever discussed in the history of WLB on the town historical site. However the tower was torn down after a fire destroyed the mansion. No mention of a bell that one day ends up in a school in Eatontown, and locals deny this proof positive hisory. Just west of this grand place was an exquisite French mansion that, for a time, became the student union building at Monmouth University. For some inexcusable reason, the French mansion was demolished around 1967. Why the University did such a thing I don't know, but they have certainly become more preservation minded over the years. Another grand beaux arts mansion in this area was Murry's brother's splendid place in Elberon, demolished decades ago. It was somewhat similar to this house - I'm not sure of the architect.

It is so sad that the Long Branch area is one of the worst preserved Gilded Age resort enclaves. You would never know that Stanford White and Peabody and Stearns designed here when you drive through the area today. Most of the mansions in Deal, Elberon, Long Branch and West Long Branch are long gone, replaced by some of the worst sort of post-war architectural garbage. Still, there are still some gems in the area and, recently, some grand new showplaces - the most notable designed by Robert A.M. Stern - have been built there.

I believe that Murry and Daniel were the brothers of Benjamin Guggenheim, one of the most famous victims of the Titanic disaster. Benjamin has been portrayed in nearly every Titanic film since the 1950s. . He was best known for changing into white tie and tails in order to go gown down with the ship like a gentleman.

Titanic BillAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6170852285107502075.post-23220152603732903072014-10-31T18:12:07.406-07:002014-10-31T18:12:07.406-07:00I mentioned the Huntington Mansion in San Marino, ...I mentioned the Huntington Mansion in San Marino, California. In 1928 the curators did remove the kitchen, servants quarters and bathrooms but in the process they did leave the basic two floors of the home intact. When you visit, it still has that warm homey atmosphere.

The home is perfectly air conditioned and contains the original lighting. One of the nice things about the home is that they have replaced and maintained the thick carpet of the grand stairs. Walking up those curved stairs feels like you're walking on clouds.

If you want a light snack they've built a new building just for that purpose.

I tried to get into the old 1911 side rooms of the home but I didn't get too far. I also tried to enter the Japanese Tea House before it was restored but a guard caught me. He huffed and puffed his way over to lecture me. My mother said don't let it bother you...go where you want. I was about 17 at the time.

John as usual did a great job of photography here, even if some of the file cabinets and office furniture got in the way. At Shadow Lawn the college has respected all the incredible details, even keeping the numerous bathrooms in wonderful working condition, as if the owners just moved out but are expecting to return one day. Here the house has been sanitized and renovated into an office building and institution, disrespecting the original interior spaces. I am grateful the building still exists, but it merely exists, it doesn't shine or bring joy to one's face. Unfortunate.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6170852285107502075.post-17110345229708838712014-10-30T22:07:14.156-07:002014-10-30T22:07:14.156-07:00If you're a poor college [or pretend to be], I...If you're a poor college [or pretend to be], I guess the only thing you can do is take over a beautiful old mansion and turn it into an office building or library.
