I was the last manager of Broadlands 1979 - 89 (Aknusti) prior to it's sale. I was responsible for redoing the inside interior as well as the outside of the house which had deteriorated quite a bit prior to 1979. It was a great old house which hosted some grand parties in it's time and in mine. The wing of the house was the servants quarters which were not refurbished as they were not damaged from the 1953 fire as was neither the old kitchen. The latter buyers had pretty well removed most of the furnishings and paintings when I was there again on auction day with one of the previous owners. They did pay to much by the way! I have heard that the property has run down since that time. The stable, and estate have quite a few interesting stories behind them as well as the house. It is a beautiful estate, thanks for the memories! It was demolished in the early 1960's after a tax dispute with the neighboring towns. Shadows of the gardens by Fletcher Steele remain as well as the Gerry church, also designed by Cram, St. James, Lake Delaware, a noted ecclesiastical gem. John Morgan, grandson to financier Junius Spencer Morgan, Jr. owned (he sold it off in the 1990'S) another lovely island estate, off Stamford CT:

http://www.sothebysrealty.com/eng/sales/detail/180-l-1180-0065587/island-paradise-stamford-ct-06902

As for Aknusti I took several photos of the estate, a simple google search will turn them up from flickr, and its my understanding that the plan for the Aman Resort continues. Bovina, NY's zoning board granted a special exception to the resort owners property for alcohol sale, et al. However I think the current owners know now they vastly overpaid for the property and still must wonder if they ever can get a return on investment.Kellsboro Jackhttp://www.flickr.com/photos/27332539@N07/sets/72157625566011700/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6170852285107502075.post-67682191029809200782012-01-01T17:57:56.206-08:002012-01-01T17:57:56.206-08:00I just learned something. I knew that a Junius Spencer Morgan built "Salutations," but years ago I read some article which (incorrectly, as it turns out) gave building credit to J.P. Morgan Senior's nephew, who was also named Junius Spencer Morgan and, like his uncle, was apparently a great collector and aesthete. Now I finally know that it was actually Pierpont Senior's grandson who built "Salutations." That there is one confusing family tree! Two of Pierpont's sisters evidently married men with their own surname of "Morgan." Thanks for clearing that up for me!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6170852285107502075.post-85595141221417144872011-12-31T21:37:46.250-08:002011-12-31T21:37:46.250-08:00I'm in love with your blog. According to another website it was most recently purchased by a botique resort company for conversion to as a destination resort. There is no evidence of that on the Bing or Google map views.

After some study, I think it is incorrect that the current portico replaced the portico shown in the photos of the original. That portico was actually a porte-cochere with a drive lane through it and would have been on the opposite side of the house where the drive is (assuming the drive was always on the side as it is today. Also, the foundation under the current portico appears to be original and is round rather than rectilinear, suggesting an original portico on that side would have been oval in form rather than rectilinear as in the original photograph. I could be totally wrong, of course.Glenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08864995338815459615noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6170852285107502075.post-73677749517170589252011-12-28T20:22:58.376-08:002011-12-28T20:22:58.376-08:00The more I see of Salutations, the more I like it!...The more I see of Salutations, the more I like it!ChipSFhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06533749227364674468noreply@blogger.com
